WORCESTER - Robert Phillips, MD, PhD, director of the Heart and Vascular Center of Excellence and senior vice president of UMass Memorial Medical Center, will be presented the American Heart Association's Heart of Gold award at the Central MA Heart and Stroke Ball Saturday, February 6, at Mechanics Hall.

The Heart of Gold Award is bestowed annually to a member of Central Massachusetts' health care community who has enhanced the quality of life in the region and who has played a significant role in advancing the mission of the American Heart Association.

"I am honored to receive this prestigious award from the American Heart Association. This honor belongs to the entire Heart and Vascular Center of Excellence team at UMass Memorial and I am accepting it on behalf of our team," said Dr. Phillips. "It is a privilege to participate in this event that supports research and community outreach in the fight against heart disease and stroke, our region's No. 1 and No. 3 killers."

In 2005, Dr. Phillips was recruited to UMass Memorial Medical Center and UMass Medical School to establish the Heart and Vascular Center of Excellence. Under his leadership, the Cardiac Surgery Program at UMass Memorial consistently ranks as one of the top performing programs in the United States. UMass Memorial is also the number one hospital in New England for surviving a heart attack according to the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Dr. Phillips continues to be a strong advocate for integrated patient-centered cardiovascular care, education and research.

Previously Dr. Phillips was professor of Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, where he received his medical and doctorate degree in molecular biology. His postgraduate residency in internal medicine took place at Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and fellowships in cardiology and hypertension at Mount Sinai. Immediately prior to his position at UMass Memorial, Dr. Phillips was chairman of medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital, New York. He has served as principal investigator or co-principal Investigator on more than 60 clinical studies, with over 140 peer-reviewed publications as a result of his research. Dr. Phillips is a senior editor of the Journal of Clinical Hypertension and serves on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Hypertension where he is the national chairman of continuing medical education. He is also a member of the American Heart Association's Board of Directors of the Founders Affiliate.

The Heart of Gold award will be presented at the 2010 Central MA Heart and Stroke Ball. The annual event, attended by more than 500 prominent guests, will include an evening of dinner, entertainment, dancing, live and silent auctions, as well as a special appeal for children's health. The proceeds help provide financial support necessary for the American Heart Association to achieve its mission of building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.
